Raúl Avelar formou-se em Direito pela Universidade Católica, em 2011, tendo ingressado no Mestrado de Cultura e Sociedade na Europa da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, no mesmo ano. Posteriormente realizou uma pós-graduação em Gestão Cultural pelo ISCTE, em 2013, tendo trabalhado como jurista e investigador para a Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, entre esse ano e 2017.
Atualmente, após ter estagiado como jornalista em 2010, elabora recensões de álbuns musicais para uma publicação on-line e leciona música, enquanto prossegue os estudos na licenciatura de Música, vertente Jazz, na Universidade de Évora.
