Ralph Lazar passou os primeiros vinte anos em África, os vinte seguintes na Europa e os últimos dez no norte da Califórnia (Condado de Marin). E mesmo agora ainda não assentou, pois mora entre Londres e a Cidade do Cabo.
Nasceu em Joanesburgo e estudou Direito e Economia na Universidade da Cidade do Cabo e depois na London School of Economics.
Quando se formou, trabalhou na área financeira que o levou a visitar trinta e seis países durante esse período.
