Predrag Matvejevitch nasceu na Bósnia-Herzegovina (Mostar, 1932), filho de pai russo e mãe croata. Foi um dos mais importantes ensaístas europeus, professor universitário em Roma e Paris e conselheiro para o Mediterrâneo do Grupo de Sábios da União Europeia. Tornou-se um mestre incontestável da geopoética através dos seus numerosos escritos sobre o Mediterrâneo, entre os quais o Breviário Mediterrânico, publicado pela Quetzal – com tradução do poeta Pedro Tamen. Matvejevitch morreu em Zagreb, Croácia, em 2017. Publicou Europa Maldita (2005), Epistolário Russo e A Ilha Mediterrâneo (1992), entre muitos outros títulos.
