Pierre Bourdieu nasceu em 1930.
Foi diretor da Escola de Altos Estudos em Ciências Sociais, diretor da revista "Actes de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales" e Catedrático de Sociologia no Collège de France.
Figura central da sociologia francesa da segunda metade do século XX, Pierre Bourdieu tornou-se, no fim da sua vida, e devido ao seu envolvimento político, um dos principais atores da vida intelectual francesa.
A sua obra sociológica é dominada por uma análise dos mecanismos de reprodução das hierarquias sociais, reservando um lugar muito importante aos fatores culturais e simbólicos.
Faleceu em 2002.
