Peter Phillips é professor de Sociologia Política na Sonoma State University desde 1994. Foi diretor do Project Censored, de 1996 a 2010, e presidente da Media Freedom Foundation, de 2003 a 2017. O seu trabalho é reconhecido pelos vários prémios que lhe foram atribuídos: PEN Censorship Award 2008, Pillar Human Rights Award 2014 e Firecracker Alternative Book Award 1997 para Melhor Livro Político. Vive na Califórnia com a sua mulher Mary Lia.
