Peter Høeg nasceu em Copenhaga, em 1957. Foi bailarino, actor, marinheiro e alpinista, antes de se tornar no mais aclamado dos novos escritores dinamarqueses. Publicado em mais de trinta países, Smilla e os Mistérios da Neve vendeu mais de 2 milhões de exemplares e foi considerado o melhor livro de 1993 pela Time, People e Entertainment Weekly. O romance foi adaptado para o cinema por Bille August, num filme protagonizado por Julia Ormond.
