Penelope Fitzgerald é uma das mais notáveis vozes da ficção britânica. Trabalhou na BBC e durante a guerra foi editora de um jornal literário, geriu uma livraria e ensinou em várias escolas. Autora de nove romances, três dos quais – A Livraria, The Beginning of Spring e The Gate of Angels – estiveram na shortlist para o Booker Prize, ganhando o prémio em 1979 com Offshore.
