Patrick Süskind nasceu a 26 de março de 1949 em Ambach, Starnberger Lake, Baviera. De 1968 a 1974 estudou história medieval e moderna, em Munique e em Aix-en-Provence. Nos anos 80 trabalhou como guionista para o meio televisivo ainda antes de escrever O Perfume. O seu segundo romance A Pomba, mais tarde adaptado para teatro subiu ao palco do BAC Teatro (Londres) em maio de 1993. Foi também autor de O Contrabaixo, a peça de teatro que teve a sua estreia em 1981, em Munique, tornando-se desde então uma das peças mais representadas na Alemanha, Suíça e Aústria. O seu conto The Story of Mr Sommer (1992) atingiu, tal como O Perfume, um estrondoso sucesso em todo o mundo. Patrick Süskind vive atualmente em Munique.
