Pär Lagerkvist (1891-1974), escritor sueco laureado com o Prémio Nobel em 1951, é autor de uma vasta obra que se reparte pela dramaturgia, pelo ensaio e pelo romance. Firmou-se no panorama literário sueco devido à apologia da simplicidade da escrita e à sua oposição ao artificialismo. A crítica aos regimes totalitários e a reflexão profunda sobre o bem e o mal, a perversidade humana e a deformação moral são os temas obsessivos dos seus livros, cuja força reside nas personagens memoráveis que cristalizam impulsos eternos do homem.
