Onésimo Teotónio Almeida nasceu nos Açores (São Miguel), em 1946, e reside desde 1972 nos Estados Unidos. Doutorou-se em Filosofia na Universidade de Brown (Providence, Rhode Island) e aí foi catedrático no Departamento de Estudos Portugueses e Brasileiros, lecionando também no Wayland Collegium for Liberal Learning e no Renaissance and Early Modern Studies Program da mesma universidade durante meio século. A Brown concedeu-lhe uma cátedra honorária, a Royce Family Professorship in Teaching Excellence. É doutor honoris causa pela Universidade de Aveiro e pela Universidade Lusófona. Foi orador oficial do 10 de Junho de 2018. Divide-se entre a escrita livre (crónica, conto, teatro, prosemas) e o ensaio, que ocupa o lugar central. Na Quetzal publicou Despenteando Parágrafos, A Obsessão da Portugalidade, O Século dos Prodígios e Diálogos Lusitanos.
