Nikolai Gavrílovitch Tchernichévski, democrata revolucionário russo, nasceu em 12 de julho de 1828. Em1806, entra para o Seminário de Penza e adota o toponímico Tchernichévski, em alusão a Tchernichevo, onde havia nascido. Entre 1846 e 1850, estuda História e Filologia na Universidade de São Petersburgo. A partir de 1853, passa a ser crítico literário da revista Sovremennik [O Contemporâneo], na qual permaneceu até 1862, ano em que é preso, acusado de agitação política ao participar na elaboração de um panfleto.
