Presidente da Berggruen Holding, empresa privada com mais de 100 investimentos diretos nos últimos 20 anos em setores públicos e privados, Nicolas Berggruen criou e preside também o Instituto Berggruen (http://berggruen.org/), criado em 2009 para o estudo de novos métodos de governança reunindo contribuições teóricas de líderes políticos, pensadores, empreendedores e empresários de comunicação contemporâneos, entre os quais estão Tony Blair, Mario Monti, Gerhard Schroeder, Ernesto Zedillo, Joseph Stiglitz, Francis Fukuyama, Anthony Giddens e Juan Luís Cebrián. Baseado na Califórnia, o instituto reúne hoje uma importante fortuna crítica de análises e propostas para os dilemas surgidos nos últimos anos, boa parte sintetizada em Governança inteligente para o século XXI.
