Neal Ascherson nasceu em Edimburgo, na Escócia, em 1932. Estudou História na Universidade de Cambridge, dedicou-se à Arqueologia e foi correspondente na Ásia, em África e na Europa de Leste do diário The Observer. É autor de vários estudos de carácter histórico.
O Mar Negro obteve o Saltire Award em 1995 e o LA Times Book Prize for History em 1996.
