Milton Sanford Mayer (1908-1986) foi professor, jornalista e publicou mais de uma dezena de livros. Estudou na Universidade de Chicago e foi jornalista na Associated Press, no Chicago Evening Post e no Chicago Evening American, tendo-se notabilizado por uma coluna mensal que manteve durante 40 anos na revista The Progressive. Deu aulas em várias universidades americanas antes de, depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, se mudar para a Alemanha para viver e conversar com várias famílias alemãs. Dessa experiência nasceu o seu livro mais reconhecido, Eles Pensavam Que Eram Livres, publicado originalmente em 1955.
