Nascido em Paris, em 1924, Michel Tournier é considerado um dos mais notáveis escritores franceses contemporâneos. Da sua vasta obra, destacam-se os romances Sexta-Feira ou os Limbos do Pacífico (1967; Grande Prémio de Romance da Academia Francesa), O Rei dos Álamos (1970; Prémio Goncourt), adaptado ao cinema pelo realizador Volker Schlöndorff, em 1996, e Os Meteoros (1975), estes dois últimos também publicados pela Dom Quixote. É ainda autor de novelas como O Galo do Mato, Gilles & Jeanne e Le Médianoche amoureux, textos literários e poéticos como Célébrations, Le Vol du vampire ou Le Miroir des idées, ensaios, contos, poemas, romances juvenis e um livro de viagens, Le vagabond immobile (1984). Publicou a sua autobiografia literária em 1977, com o título Le Vent Paraclet. Michel Tournier é membro da Academia Goncourt desde 1972.
