É professor de Física Computacional patrocinado pela Fletcher Jones na Universidade Chapman, autor de mais de 320 artigos em publicações especializadas e de 15 livros. Concluiu o Bacharelato em Física em 1967, na Universidade Cornell, e o Doutoramento em Física no Instituto de Tecnologia do Massachusetts em 1972. É fundador da Faculdade de Ciência e Tecnologia Schmid da Universidade Chapman, onde foi reitor de 2009 a 2012. Dirige o Centro de Excelência em Modelagem e Observação de Sistemas Terrestres.
