Escritor português nascido em 1705, no Brasil, onde se encontrava a sua família, Matias Aires Ramos da Silva de Eça fez estudos universitários em Coimbra e Paris. Em 1723, ocupou o cargo de provedor da Casa da Moeda, em Lisboa. A sua obra maior intitula-se Reflexões sobre a Vaidade dos Homens (1752), um ensaio filosófico que reflecte o seu conhecimento das Letras francesas. A obra foi reeditada em 1778, passando a incluir o texto Carta sobre a Fortuna. Matias Aires morreu em 1763.
