MartinWaddell nasceu em 1941 em Belfast. Quando era pequeno, queria ser futebolista, mas o amor pelos livros e por contar histórias sobrepôs-se depressa à paixão pela bola. Escreve também para adultos, mas cedo se voltou para a literatura infantil. Os seus livros para os mais pequenos refletem a sua vida e vivências num país de contrastes como a Irlanda do Norte — como o próprio diz: "Em adulto, fui pelos ares [em 1972 sobreviveu a um atentado à bomba numa igreja], enterram-me vivo, tive cancro e sobrevivi a todas estas experiências: sou um homem cheio de sorte." Em 2004, foi galardoado com o Prémio Hans Christian Andersen pelo conjunto da sua obra.
