Maria João Carrilho é lisboeta, nasceu numa família em que os sangues e histórias de guerra se cruzaram e viu publicadas as primeiras letras em Lourenço Marques.
Foi bolseira da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e do American Language Institute. Serviu bebidas em Bona e burocracias em Lisboa. Depois da licenciatura na Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa, estudou Teatro no Conservatório. Com Mandrágora passou pela Europália. Lecionou em Portugal e em São Tomé.
Se não tivessem inventado a Internet, jamais os seus caderninhos teriam saído da gaveta. Alimenta dois blogues, Lentes de Ler e Pataniscas. Integra a associação Mapa Cultural, com a qual viaja pela literatura e outros sonhos.
Publicou Bem Cedo na Noite (2011), Novelas Suburbanas (2014) e Praça do Império (2016).
Gosta de passear à beira-mar e de andar de elétrico em Lisboa.
