Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira, natural do Porto, licenciou-se e doutorou-se em Estudos Clássicos na Universidade de Coimbra, da qual é hoje professora catedrática jubilada.
Especializou-se na Universidade de Oxford. Publicou mais de trezentos livros e artigos, em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Entre esses, tanto figuram edições críticas, como a de Pausânias (Leipzig, Teubner, 3 vols., 2.ª ed., (1989-1990), como os Estudos de História da Cultura Clássica (Lisboa, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, vol. I, Cultura Grega, 12.ª ed., 2012; vol. II, Cultura Romana, 3.ª ed., 2002) ou trabalhos sobre a presença dos clássicos em autores portugueses, que vão desde António Ferreira, Camões e Andrade Caminha aos setecentistas (Árcades, Alcipe, Bocage), a Augusto Gil, a Fernando Pessoa e aos contemporâneos (como Miguel Torga, José Gomes Ferreira, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Eugénio de Andrade).
Maria Helena da Rocha Pereira foi a mais conceituada especialista portuguesa em Estudos Clássicos e foi galardoada em 2010 com o Prémio Vida Literária APE.
Faleceu em abril de 2017.
