Maria do Céu Machado é Professora Catedrática jubilada da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, Membro do Conselho Nacional de Ética para as Ciências da Vida, Vice-Presidente da Academia Portuguesa de Medicina e da European Federation of the Academies of Medicine. Foi Presidente do INFARMED (2017-19), Vice-Presidente do Conselho Nacional de Saúde (2016-17), Alta Comissária para a Saúde (2006-11), Diretora Clínica do CHLN (2013-14) e Hospital Fernando Fonseca (HFF 2005-06), Diretora dos Departamentos de Pediatria do Hospital Santa Maria (2011-17) e HFF (1996-2006).
