Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1847-1921) foi a primeira mulher a ingressar na Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (eleita em 13-06-1912). Escreveu contos e poesia, mas também ensaios e biografias. Publicou, em diversos jornais e revistas, crónicas de crítica literária e opiniões sobre ética e educação, para além de ter analisado, com notável clarividência, a condição e o papel da mulher na sociedade do seu tempo. A sua casa ¿ o primeiro dos salões literários de Lisboa ¿ foi frequentada por alguns dos nomes maiores da literatura e da cultura portugue¬sas: Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queiroz, Ramalho Ortigão e Guerra Jun¬queiro, entre outros.
