Ensaísta e professora catedrática da Universidade de Lisboa, tem um vasto currículo como investigadora na área de Letras. Fez estudos sobre vários autores portugueses, entre os quais José Saramago e António Lobo Antunes, e é autora de livros, artigos e ensaios. Colabora regularmente em periódicos, como o JL (Jornal de Letras). Em 2002, recebeu o prémio Pen 2001, atribuído a Ensaios, com sua obra "Outros Erros" , em ex-aequo com João Barrento, pela sua obra "A Espiral Vertiginosa".
