Margery Allingham nasceu em Londres a 20 de maio de 1904. Incentivada pelo pai a escrever, publicou o primeiro conto aos treze anos numa revista e aos dezanove lançou o seu primeiro romance, Blackkerchief Dick: A Tale of Mersea Island, uma narrativa de suspense histórico. Estreou-se nas obras policiais em 1928, com The White Cottage Mystery, e no ano seguinte apresentou, em The Crime at Black Dudley, então ainda como personagem secundária, Albert Campion, o detetive que marcaria presença em cerca de duas dezenas dos seus romances e outros tantos contos. Com uma escrita marcada pela sofisticação, pela inteligência e por um apurado sentido de atenção ao detalhe, os seus policiais estão entre os mais reputados clássicos da literatura de mistério. Margery Allingham faleceu a 30 de junho de 1966.
