Nascido em 1254 em Veneza, Marco Polo partiu com 17 anos, acompanhado pelo pai Niccolò e pelo tio Matteo, para chegar ao Oriente, que era, para a imaginação ocidental, o grande fascínio, a terra do mistério, do maravilhoso e de riqueza nunca vista. A viagem de ida e volta Veneza / Pequim e a estada duraram 24 anos. Tinha 41 quando regressou.
