Marc Augé, nascido em 1935, é dos mais conceituados etnólogos e antropólogos franceses. Foi presidente da École des hautes études en sciences sociales e participou em diversas missões em África e na América Latina, tendo então cunhado conceitos fundamentais da sua disciplina. O mais célebre, no entanto, o conceito de «não-lugar», aplica-se sobretudo ao mundo ocidentalizado contemporâneo, referindo-se a lugares uniformizados e transitórios, como os quartos de hotéis ou os aeroportos.
