Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (1939-2003) nasceu em Barcelona, estudou Filosofia e Letras, secção Românicas, trabalhou como jornalista e foi uma das figuras mais importantes das letras de Espanha. Escreveu romances, literatura policial, poesia, ensaio e crónicas sobre temas variados, da política internacional à gastronomia. Foi um militante político e um antifranquista ativo. Além de ter criado um detetive conhecido no mundo todo, Pepe Carvalho, obteve numerosos prémios literários e muitos dos seus livros foram adaptados ao cinema e à televisão. Entre outros livros, escreveu Os Mares do Sul, Assassinato no Comité Central, Autobiografia do General Franco, O Pianista ou Os Pássaros de Banguecoque.
