Manuel Mujica Lainez nasceu em Buenos Aires em 1910 e morreu em 1984. Durante a juventude viveu dois anos em Paris. Para além do seu trabalho de jornalista, escreveu mais de vinte livros, entre os quais romances, contos, biografias, poemas, crónicas de viagem e ensaios. Vários dos seus romances e contos foram adaptados ao cinema e à televisão. O romance Bomarzo deu origem a uma ópera de Alberto Ginastera que ganhou o Prémio Pulitzer. Bomarzo foi galardoado com o Prémio Nacional de Literatura argentino, em 1963, e o Prémio John F. Kennedy, em 1964. Os livros de Manuel Mujica Lainez estão traduzidos em mais de quinze línguas.
