Manuel Maria Carrilho é um dos mais originais e destacados filósofos portugueses, com uma vasta obra publicada em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Foi professor catedrático de Filosofia Contemporânea na Universidade Nova de Lisboa, ministro da Cultura nos governos presididos por António Guterres, parlamentar na Assembleia da República e embaixador de Portugal na UNESCO, em Paris, tendo deixado a marca da sua matriz filosófica nas diversas funções públicas que exerceu. A Nova Peste é o 25.º livro da sua autoria. Foi também o coordenador de diversas publicações coletivas, nacionais e internacionais, sobre temas filosóficos, políticos e culturais.
