Manuel Joaquim Alves Leal Gomes nasceu em Luanda, Angola, em Novembro de 1950, tendo obtido a Licenciatura em Engenharia de Minas e mais tarde o Doutoramento em Geologia. Em busca de melhor vida percorreu os cinco continentes, tendo trabalhado em túneis, barragens, hidroelétricas, minas e na indústria petrolífera em Angola, Brasil e Portugal. Foi Colaborador Científico da Universidade de Luanda e Professor Associado da Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, pelo que tem farta bibliografia científica e técnica publicada. Também publicou ficção literária, ensaio, poesia e teatro nos últimos anos.
