Manoel de Oliveira Paiva

Manoel de Oliveira Paiva [Ceará, 1861-Ceará, 1892] começa a sua actividade literária enquanto estuda na Escola Militar no Rio de Janeiro, fundando nessa altura a revista A Cruzada, onde publicou o seu folhetim Tal Filha, Tal Esposa. No entanto, dois anos mais tarde, tem de abandonar a Escola Militar por sofrer de tuberculose. Regressa então ao Ceará onde, enquanto jornalista, luta pelo abolicionismo. Paralelamente, intensifica a produção literária através de contos, crónicas e sonetos. Em 1889 é publicado em folhetins no jornal Libertador o seu romance de estreia, A Afilhada, e, três anos mais tarde, deixa pronto um novo romance, Dona Guidinha do Poço, que contudo só viria a ser publicado em 1952. Esta obra é considerada um dos mais marcantes romances do naturalismo brasileiro.
