Professor catedrático (1984) de Psicoterapia e Psicologia da Saúde da Universidade de Lisboa. Licenciou-se em Psicologia Genética na Universidade de Genebra, onde foi aluno de Jean Piaget, e em Orientação Escolar e Profissional na Universidade de Lausana. Em 1975, doutorou-se em Psicologia do Aconselhamento na Universidade da Califórnia em Santa Bárbara, onde também lecionou.

Entre os seus trabalhos mais conhecidos contam-se a Modificação do Comportamento (Edições Horizonte, 5.ª edição, 2005), Psicopatologia do Desenvolvimento (McGrawHill, 2.ª edição, 2000) e, com Luísa Barros, a Psicologia da Doença para Cuidados de Saúde (ASA, 2005). No domínio do thriller ou policial psicopatológico publicou também a trilogia In&Out (Relógio d’Água,1998), O Corpo Conversivo (Relógio d’Água, 2000) e A Psicologia Não Existe (Quarteto, 2002).
