Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), patrono anarquista dos poetas norte-americanos, tornou-se pacifista depois de testemunhar a destruição de Nagasáqui – um ativismo que cultivaria toda a vida. Em 1953, fundou a Livraria City Lights, em São Francisco, palco da contracultura beat e de leituras acompanhadas de jazz e álcool noite dentro, onde Kerouac e Burroughs marcaram presença. É autor de mais de quarenta obras, nas quais se destacam Uma Coney Island da Mente (1958) e Pictures of the Gone World (1955). Quis libertar a poesia do mofo da academia, dar voz a autores necessários e afirmava: «Não me dei conta de que era poeta, dei-me conta de que tinha algo a dizer.»
