Francisco José Gómez-Argüello Wirtz nasce em León (Espanha) a 9 de Janeiro de 1939. Estuda Belas-Artes na Academia de San Fernando, em Madrid, onde obtém o título de Professor de Pintura e Desenho. Em 1959 recebe o Prémio Nacional Extraordinário de Pintura. Após uma profunda crise existencial, produz-se nele uma forte conversão, que o leva a dedicar toda a sua vida a Cristo e à Igreja. Em 1960, com o escultor Coomontes e o vitralista Muñoz de Pablos, funda o grupo de investigação e desenvolvimento de Arte Sacra «Gremio 62» e representam Espanha na Exposição Universal de Arte Sacra em Royan (França).
