Juanjo Guarnido nasceu em Granada, Espanha, em 1967. Com o Curso de desenho obtido na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Granada, nos inícios dos anos 90 muda-se para Madrid, dedicando-se à realização de storyboards para diversas produtoras de televisão e em 1993 muda-se para Paris, passando a integrar os estúdios Walt Disney em Montreuil. Adepto da BD europeia, inicia a produção do seu primeiro álbum, o tomo 1 da série "Blacksad" (Dargaud), publicado no ano 2000.
Entre os seus trabalhos mais recente, destacam-se "O Burlão nas Índias", desenvolvido em parceria com o francês Alain Ayroles e a série Blacksad que a Ala dos Livros publicou.
