Joseph Murphy (1898-1981) foi um dos autores do século XX de maior sucesso no campo do desenvolvimento pessoal. Dirigiu a Igreja da Ciência Divina, em Los Angeles, durante 28 anos, proferindo palestras e sermões para milhares de pessoas. Tem mais de 30 livros publicados, sendo o mais conhecido O Poder do Subconsciente, considerado um dos melhores livros de autoajuda alguma vez escritos.
É apontado como o herdeiro espiritual de escritores como James Allen, Dale Carnegie e Norman Vincent Peale, e um precursor e inspirador de escritores e oradores motivacionais contemporâneos como Zig Ziglar, Louise Hay e Tony Robbins, permanecendo até hoje como grande influência para uma legião de seguidores.
