Nasceu em Tomar a 10 de abril de 1942. Fez o curso liceal em Tomar e frequentou a Faculdade de Direito de Coimbra. Depois do serviço militar obrigatório, frequentou a Faculdade de Direito em Lisboa. É jornalista desde 1973 e foi o fundador da secção de gastronomia do semanário Expresso.
