O seu primeiro estatuto profissional foi o de jornalista. Tem formação filosófica, teológica, jurídica e sociológica, advoga há mais de um quarto de século. As prisões preocupam-no e discutiu-as na imprensa já no princípio dos anos noventa. A sua tensão com a patologia das práticas institucionais tem sido constante. Costuma dizer que os advogados são o contrário dos funcionários, como Husserl dizia dos filósofos.
