José Manuel Leite Viegas é Professor Auxiliar (com Agregação) no ISCTE - IUL, Investigador Sénior do CIES-ISCTE e, atualmente, Presidente do Departamento de Sociologia. Tem-se dedicado à investigação sobre variados temas em particular: cidadania e valores políticos, participação política, o processo de tomada de decisão em democracia e deliberação democrática, tolerância política e o fenómeno das associações voluntárias. É editor e/ou autor de vários livros, incluindo: Crossroad to Modernity (2000), As Mulheres na Política (2001), Democracia, Novos Desafios, Novos Horizontes (2004), Portugal at the Polls (2007), Institutions and Politics (2009). Escreveu igualmente vários artigos sobre atitudes políticas, abstenção eleitoral e associativismo voluntário.
