José Pedro Machado held degrees in Romance Philology from the University of Lisbon and in Pedagogical Sciences from the University of Coimbra. A professor, researcher, philologist, Arabist, and lexicographer, he was a member of some of the most prestigious Portuguese and foreign cultural and scientific institutions. He was part of the commission in charge of organizing the Vocabulary of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He received the medal of cultural merit from the Ministry of Culture, the gold medal from the municipality of Faro, and in 1996, he was distinguished by the Portuguese Academy of History for his cultural and scientific merit, receiving the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Public Instruction.
