José Pedro Machado era licenciado em Filologia Românica pela Universidade de Lisboa e em Ciências Pedagógicas pela Universidade de Coimbra. Professor, investigador, filólogo, arabista, dicionarista, foi membro de algumas das mais prestigiadas instituições culturais e científicas portuguesas e estrangeiras. Integrou a comissão encarregada da organização do Vocabulário da Academia de Ciências de Lisboa. Recebeu a medalha de mérito cultural do Ministério da Cultura, a medalha de ouro do município de Faro e, em 1996, foi distinguido pela Academia Portuguesa de História pelo seu mérito cultural e científico recebendo o cargo de Grande Oficial da Ordem de Instrução Pública.
