José Mateus nasceu em Castelo Branco, em 1963. Arquiteto, fundou com Nuno Mateus o atelier ARX Portugal, cujo trabalho tem merecido diversas distinções a nível nacional e internacional. É presidente da direção da Trienal de Arquitetura de Lisboa. Foi vice-presidente do Conselho Diretivo Regional Sul da Ordem dos Arquitetos e vice-presidente do Conselho Diretivo do Centro Cultural de Belém. Foi também professor associado no Instituto Superior Técnico, docente na Escola Superior de Artes e Design e no ISCTE, convidado na Universidade Internacional da Catalunha, em Barcelona. Faz parte do Experts Board do European Prize for Urban Public Space e da Bolsa de Peritos do conselho consultivo para a Arte em Espaço Público da cidade de Lisboa.
