José Mariano Gago

José Mariano Gago (1948-2015) teve uma carreira que passou pelo ensino universitário, a investigação científica e a política. Licenciado em Engenharia Eletrotécnica pelo Instituto Superior Técnico, foi bolseiro do Instituto de Alta Cultura, no Laboratório de Física Nuclear e de Altas Energias da École Polytechnique, e obteve o grau de Docteur d’État ès Sciences, em Física, pela Université Paris VI Pierre e Marie Curie em 1976. Foi presidente da Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica, professor catedrático do Departamento de Física do Instituto Superior Técnico, investigador em física experimental das partículas elementares na Escola Politécnica, no CERN e Laboratório de Física Experimental de Partículas (que fundou e presidiu inicialmente). De 1995 a 2002 foi Ministro da Ciência e da Tecnologia e em 2005 foi nomeado ministro da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior. Desempenhou um papel reconhecidamente relevante no desenvolvimento da ciência e da tecnologia em Portugal.
