José Manuel Figueiredo Santos doutorou-se em Sociologia da Cultura, pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa, no ano de 2002. É professor coordenador na Escola de Gestão, Hotelaria e Turismo – Universidade do Algarve e investigador convidado do Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Linguagens.

Na sua obra, destacam-se: Modernidade e Gestão da Velhice (1998), Turismo Mosaico de Sonhos (2002), Turismo Agridoce – Formas de Visão e Divisão (2007), Turismo Residencial - Modos de Estar noutro lugar (2011) e Sociologia – Um olhar sociológico sobre o mundo (2016).
