José Luís D'Almeida licenciou-se em Ciências da Educação pela Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto (FPCE-UP). Tirou o mestrado na mesma faculdade e Doutorou-se em Serviço Social pelo Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) da Universidade do Porto.
Atualmente é docente da licenciatura e do mestrado em Serviço Social, foi vice – diretor do Mestrado em Serviço Social, e é Investigador efetivo do Centro de Estudos Transdisciplinares para o Desenvolvimento (CETRAD) da Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.
É membro fundador da European Social Work Research Association.
