José Bento nasceu a 17 de novembro de 1932. Foi um dos fundadores, nos anos 50, da revista de poesia Cassiopeia. Desde então, traduziu, por exemplo, Fernando de Rojas, Jorge Luis Borges, Miguel de Unamuno, Santa Teresa de Ávila, e organizou antologias de Garcilaso, Quevedo, Antonio Machado, Manuel Machado, Juan Jimenez, Francisco Brines, Vicente Alexandre, Federico García Lorca, Cernuda. É considerado um dos melhores tradutores portugueses e já recebeu diversos prémios, inclusivamente o Prémio Cervantes, atribuído pelo governo espanhol pela sua atividade enquanto tradutor. É também autor de vários livros de poesia, como «Alguns Motetos» ou «Sítios», publicados na Assírio & Alvim.
