José António Pagola é sacerdote e tem dedicado a sua vida aos estudos bíblicos, nomeadamente à investigação sobre o Jesus histórico. Nascido em 1937, é licenciado em Teologia pela Universidade Gregoriana de Roma (1962), licenciado em Sagradas Escrituras pelo Instituto Bíblico de Roma (1965), e diplomado em Ciências Bíblicas pela École Biblique de Jerusalém (1966). Professor no seminário de San Sebastián (Espanha) e na Faculdade de Teologia do Norte de Espanha (sede de Vitória), foi também reitor do seminário diocesano de San Sebastián e vicário-geral da diocese de San Sebastián.
