José Figueiredo é licenciado em economia.
Foi professor nas universidades do Porto, Coimbra e Aveiro.
Foi sobretudo na gestão de empresas privadas que fez carreira, nomeadamente com longos períodos no Grupo Sonae e, depois, no Grupo Salvador Caetano, onde ainda exerce funções corporativas.
Mantém uma relação de longo prazo com o Grupo Segurador Fidelidade, onde ainda exerce funções.
Colabora regularmente com o jornal Solidariedade com uma crónica mensal sobre atualidade económica.
