Jorge Pais de Sousa fez o doutoramento e o Mestrado em História Contemporânea, uma Especialização em Ciências Documentais e uma Licenciatura em Filosofia, na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra.
É bolseiro de investigação, membro do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX (CEIS20) e também membro do grupo de investigação Intelectuais e Poder no Mundo Ibero-Americano, com sede na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
Obteve, em 2011, uma Bolsa de Pós-Doutoramento da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
