Jon Rogawski
A professor for over 30 years, Jon Rogawski paid close attention and learned a great deal from his own students.
These valuable lessons influenced his way of thinking and writing, and the creation of a Calculus textbook.
He simultaneously earned a Master's degree in Mathematics from Yale University and a Doctorate in Mathematics from Princeton University, where he was supervised by Robert Langlands.
Before joining the Department of Mathematics at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) in 1986 as a Full Professor, he was a visiting professor and researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies and at the universities of Bonn and Paris, in Jussieu and Orsay.
His research interests included Number Theory, Automorphic Forms, and Harmonic Analysis in semisimple groups.
He published numerous research articles in high-level mathematical publications, including his research monograph entitled Automorphic Representations of Unitary Groups in Three Variables (Princeton University Press).
He received a fellowship from the Sloan Foundation and was an editor of the publications. Pacific Mathematics Journal and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.
Sadly, Jon Rogawski passed away in September 2011.
His commitment to presenting the beauty of Calculus and the important role this discipline plays in students' understanding of the world as a whole constitutes the legacy that continues to live on in each new edition of Calculus.
